According
to The Gray Sheets recent MDMA reimbursement
panel coverage, physician specialty societies are
gaining influence over reimbursement policies. And
yet, its no longer acceptable for device manufacturers
to lobby AMA advisory panel members
about proposed CPT code changes.
Nevertheless,
manufacturers shouldnt hesitate to gain support
for their technologies by engaging specialty societies
in other, more appropriate ways. That was the advice
of panel member and JR Associates President, Judy
Rosenbloom.
Rosenbloom
encouraged manufacturers to recognize that each
specialty society has different structures and processes.
She recommended that they focus on introducing
the company, the device, and its value in a very
non-asking way, so-to-speak.
After
the initial introduction, follow-up can involve
asking for a societys support on a coding
application, she said. This helps reveal whos
responsible an advocacy group, or an individual
physician.
The
article features illustrations of societies
growing influence over coverage and payment. In
addition, commentary is included from other panel
members Jo Ellen Slurzberg of Almryra, and
John McInnes, MD, a partner at the law firm of Arnold
& Porter.
